A POSTMODERN/RHETORICAL ADVENTURE THROUGH THE GOSPEL OF JOHN IN SHAKESPEAREAN SONNET FORM

GOSPEL OF BOKE {23 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_23_01}   THE BULLSHIT-EATER SONG? Boke strums a chord

{GOB_23_02}   on his guitar, mid-morning -- he can't sleep.

{GOB_23_03}   Tonight, of course, he'll pick up where the Lord

{GOB_23_04}   and him left off -- but now the silly sheep ...

{GOB_23_05}   .. who eat Bush bullshit make Boke lose all hope.

{GOB_23_06}   You cannot sing a sonnet, but Boke tries:

{GOB_23_07}   "HEY bullshit-eaters, listen to the Pope --

{GOB_23_08}   he's dumb about some things, but some things wise.

{GOB_23_09}   What's that? They didn't put him on TV

{GOB_23_10}   when he was rapping superpower sins.

{GOB_23_11}   Preemptive war -- Dumb Dubya's policy.

{GOB_23_12}   We had no chance to shout out our Amens."

{GOB_23_13}   We need a chorus: "Bullshit-eaters stink ...

{GOB_23_14}   ... and Paris Hilton's bottom's mighty pink."

GOSPEL OF BOKE {24 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_24_01}   THE LORD SAYS, "Boke, put that guitar away.

{GOB_24_02}   Your gift is not for singing -- Can't you tell?"

{GOB_24_03}   "Yes, Lord, I know. So, sadly, I will lay

{GOB_24_04}   this guitar down this morning ... GO TO HELL!

{GOB_24_05}   Just kidding, Lord, but you put this guitar

{GOB_24_06}   into my hands for something -- Don't you know?"

{GOB_24_07}   "So Boke would be a country superstar?"

{GOB_24_08}   "A smartass God, just what I need. Oh no! ...

{GOB_24_09}   ... No country -- but the Dixie Chicks -- for me."

{GOB_24_10}   No dumbass patriots so scared of death

{GOB_24_11}   they blaspheme Jesus, ' Killing makes us free. '

{GOB_24_12}   Their songs smell strong of Satan's bullshit breath."

{GOB_24_13}   GOD SAYS: "The Chicks apologized." "That's right,

{GOB_24_14}   yeah, screw 'em! ... Um, I mean, Lord, like a light."

GOSPEL OF BOKE {25 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_25_01}   "GO BACK TO SLEEP, BOKE. Rest, then we'll begin

{GOB_25_02}   another chapter of your gospel book."

{GOB_25_03}   "Yes, Lord, I'm tired -- so hard to never sin."

{GOB_25_04}   God smiles and tucks Boke in. One good-dad look, ...

{GOB_25_05}   ... then off to heaven where an angel sings

{GOB_25_06}   much higher than sweet Boke will ever reach.

{GOB_25_07}   God spared him the temptation music brings

{GOB_25_08}   to sing one song forever. "He must teach ...

{GOB_25_09}   ... in Boke's strange, special way that does not loop

{GOB_25_10}   the same words ev'ry night -- forever flows

{GOB_25_11}   in rivers meant to wash away the poop

{GOB_25_12}   before it's turned to "everybody knows" ...

{GOB_25_13}   ... before the bullshit-eaters chomp it down.

{GOB_25_14}   God hums a chorus ... "What else rhymes with brown?"

GOSPEL OF BOKE {26 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_26_01}   BOKE DREAMS: The Soggy Bottom Boys and Girl

{GOB_26_02}   are singing acapella as he floats

{GOB_26_03}   on pony-back as all his sails unfurl.

{GOB_26_04}   Boke thinks: I hope somebody's taking notes ...

{GOB_26_05}   ... 'cause dreams can fade away before the dawn.

{GOB_26_06}   He sees an angel smile. She's jotting down

{GOB_26_07}   his stream of consciousness as he is drawn

{GOB_26_08}   along the flow where God is rhyming brown.

{GOB_26_09}   He does not hold the till, but still his soul

{GOB_26_10}   selects among the choices God provides

{GOB_26_11}   for him among the channels near the shoal

{GOB_26_12}   Christ made to keep the devil's darker tides ...

{GOB_26_13}   ... at bay. As Boke lies sleeping in sweet dreams

{GOB_26_14}   where God empowers all their crazy schemes.

GOSPEL OF BOKE {27 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_27_01}   "THE WOMAN AT THE WELL," God's hand has scrawled

{GOB_27_02}   across Boke's legal pad, and then three dots.

{GOB_27_03}   "OK," says Boke, quite clearly unenthralled

{GOB_27_04}   with Sunday-School rehashing all the plots ...

{GOB_27_05}   ... that ev'rybody knows who lived to tell

{GOB_27_06}   of children's church -- who've got what there's to get.

{GOB_27_07}   IT'S SIX O'CLOCK PM AT JACOB'S WELL

{GOB_27_08}   SAMARIA: Christ sits where people let ...

{GOB_27_09}   ... their buckets down. A woman comes. Christ speaks:

{GOB_27_10}   "Give me to drink." The woman asks: "A Jew

{GOB_27_11}   is asking me, Samaritan? He seeks

{GOB_27_12}   an interaction with me? Jew's don't do ...

{GOB_27_13}   ... no dealing with Samaritans. I'm shocked."

{GOB_27_14}   That's Jesus for you, opening what's locked.

GOSPEL OF BOKE {28 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_28_01}   GOD WHISPERS, "MORE?" OK. THE WELL AT 6 ...

{GOB_28_02}   CHRIST (to the woman): "If you knew the gift

{GOB_28_03}   of God, and who I am and asked -- I'd fix

{GOB_28_04}   you up with LIVING WATER." (Catch my drift?)

{GOB_28_05}   "Sir, you don't have a bucket." (Clearly not.)

{GOB_28_06}   Christ smiles: "If you drink from this well you'll thirst

{GOB_28_07}   again. You'd have to come back here a lot.

{GOB_28_08}   The water I would give ... within will burst ...

{GOB_28_09}   ... in everlasting flow ... Forevermore:

{GOB_28_10}   Eternal life. You int'rested in that?"

{GOB_28_11}   "Yes sir! Give me that water! Nevermore

{GOB_28_12}   to lug a bucket from this well." Christ sat ...

{GOB_28_13}   ... right there and said, "Go call your spouse." The sun-

{GOB_28_14}   light hurt her eyes, "Well sir, I don't have one." {>>>}

GOSPEL OF BOKE {29 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_29_01}   CHRIST SAID: "Thou has well said, I'm husbandless.

{GOB_29_02}   For thou has had five husbands, and the man

{GOB_29_03}   you're living with is not. That's not a guess."

{GOB_29_04}   "I see you are a prophet," she began ...

{GOB_29_05}   ... explaining that her people "worshipped in

{GOB_29_06}   this mountain. But for Jews, Jerusalem

{GOB_29_07}   is where men ought to worship with their kin."

{GOB_29_08}   THEN JESUS SAID: "Believe me, time will come ...

{GOB_29_09}   ... when mountain or Jerusalem is not

{GOB_29_10}   for worshipping the Father the right place.

{GOB_29_11}   You don't know what you worship. Jews have got

{GOB_29_12}   a firm conception -- wrongly, in this case.

{GOB_29_13}   God is a spirit. You must worship him

{GOB_29_14}   in spirit and in truth." (Time for a hymn.)

GOSPEL OF BOKE {30 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_30_01}   LET'S STAND AND SING THESE VERSES though we can't

{GOB_30_02}   sing sonnets very well, but anyway ...

{GOB_30_03}   "THANK GOD FOR MYSTERIES that can't be rant

{GOB_30_04}   like ten-commandment certainties men say ...

{GOB_30_05}   ... while executing sentences of death.

{GOB_30_06}   THANK GOD FOR STRANGENESS we can't comprehend.

{GOB_30_07}   [Pentameter's too long for pop-stars' breath.]

{GOB_30_08}   Before they wrote God's words, the clear they'd bend ...

{GOB_30_09}   ... to fit earth-bound morality. That's why

{GOB_30_10}   Christ spoke in parables. And, odder yet,

{GOB_30_11}   hard saying that offend all Apple-Pie

{GOB_30_12}   Americans who've never really met ...

{GOB_30_13}   ... the Jesus in the Bible -- Just the one

{GOB_30_14}   on TV who most always wears a gun."

GOSPEL OF BOKE {31 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_31_01}   CHRIST'S POSSE was offended He would talk

{GOB_31_02}   with "vile" Samaritans -- but held their tongue.

{GOB_31_03}   If he was really God, a woodshed walk

{GOB_31_04}   might liquify the ice cubes that were flung ...

{GOB_31_05}   ... through that last wormhole, which God's now resealed.

{GOB_31_06}   THE LORD SAYS: "Boke, what are you doing now?"

{GOB_31_07}   "You mean that wormhole? Metaphor concealed

{GOB_31_08}   within a joke. Sweet Lord, don't have a cow!"

{GOB_31_09}   "A purple one?" God says and baps Boke twice --

{GOB_31_10}   But not too hard, because Boke might make sense.

{GOB_31_11}   God's not quite sure, but yet he rolls the dice

{GOB_31_12}   by letting Boke run wild. God's on the fence ...

{GOB_31_13}   ... about the value of Boke's enterprise

{GOB_31_14}   of prophecy dressed up in sonnet's guise.

GOSPEL OF BOKE {32 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_32_01}   A PROPHET has no honor in his home

{GOB_32_02}   or in his country -- best he move around.

{GOB_32_03}   So Christ kept moving -- as Boke hopes to roam;

{GOB_32_04}   ALTHOUGH it could be said Boke's vocal sound ...

{GOB_32_05}   ... is traveling the earth while he sits still

{GOB_32_06}   composing these 154 to bring

{GOB_32_07}   the total to a thousand and fulfill

{GOB_32_08}   requirements for his license. In Beijing ...

{GOB_32_09}   ... some folks are curious how Boke can cure

{GOB_32_10}   their impotence, because they have confused

{GOB_32_11}   "Abundant Branch" dot CN, with the pure

{GOB_32_12}   dot com of boke. (OF COURSE, you are excused ...

{GOB_32_13}   ... from understanding what that gibberish

{GOB_32_14}   is s'pposed to mean. Just eat your bread and fish.)

GOSPEL OF BOKE {33 of 154} -- by BOKE (duh!)

{GOB_33_01}   THE WOMAN AT THE WELL had little weight

{GOB_33_02}   in social terms, but still she was believed

{GOB_33_03}   enough to lure her townsfolk to the fate

{GOB_33_04}   that's open to believers who'd have grieved ...

{GOB_33_05}   ... a lot if they had missed Christ's coming by.

{GOB_33_06}   They knew that a Messiah would appear.

{GOB_33_07}   So they were ready for this Jesus guy

{GOB_33_08}   and welcomed him -- quite lacking in the fear ...

{GOB_33_09}   ... the Jewish leaders had for rocking boats.

{GOB_33_10}   Yes, Jesus on his pony complicates

{GOB_33_11}   the normal sailing protocol that floats

{GOB_33_12}   the social power structure. That's what hates ...

{GOB_33_13}   ... the coming of a changer of the game.

{GOB_33_14}   Don't blame the Jews -- "the social" is to blame.
