Dear R.K. Shull: I was hoping "American Candidate" on Showtime would produce
a real worthwhile politician. It's just another contest reality game. -- L.R.T.Dear Reader: Hey, it's only a TV show, not the elixir of life
20 AUGUST 2004 - CHRIS GRAHAM - AUGUST FREE PRESS
EXCERPT:
In the end, the 10 finalists were more representative of the world of the pols
than anything resembling Middle America - the list includes former aides from
the Reagan and Clinton administrations and Chrissy Gephardt, the daughter of
congressman and former Democratic presidential contender Dick Gephardt. But hey, it's reality TV.
So really, what did you expect?

22 JULY 2004 - JENNIFER BARRET OZOLS / NEWSWEEK (MSNBC) INTERVIEWS
CHRISSY GEPHARDT BULLSHIT HEADLINE: "Politics Should Be for Everyone" (Yeah, "everyone." Chrissy Gephardt, George Dubya Bush, Al Gore ... everyone born into a political dynasty {smile}} EXCERPT: [GEPHARDT] "it was reality TV. People are eliminated as if you were voting, but we are not voted on by the American public. It's the other candidates that vote you off. It'd be like having the Democratic [presidential] contenders voting off the other candidates. I don't know about that. There were times during the show when I'd say, "Wait, this is not how things are done, this isn't how politics work." But I had to keep reminding myself that I was on a reality show. At the end of the day, it is entertainment. If it was all politics, it'd be on CNN. |

FOUND GOOGLING 22 JULY 2004 AN OLD COMMENTARY ON THE COMING "American Candidate" SERIES (from 11/23/02) WORTH REMEMBERING ... as we near the start of what came to be:
"And on the FX channel during the next two years, we're going to be able to watch a show called American Candidate. On this show, the contestants will compete to run for president, and the winner will actually run a serious campaign in 2004 for the presidency of the United States. Whether American Candidate turns out to be more Capra-esque or Fellini-esque, we'll have to wait and see. But I know I'm going to be watching.
In this 500-channel age, the TV world is metastasizing before our eyes into a complete parallel universe -- we're now citizens of Entertainment Nation. Proving once and for all, I guess, that "the business of America is show business." Which I think a president of the United States once said.
This is Kurt Andersen in Studio 360.

4 JULY 2004 - Utah Freedom Activist Newsletter
Libertarian Party Politics
Richard Mack filed for governor of Utah, running on the Libertarian Party ticket. I was immediately impressed. I sent money to his campaign, I volunteered to work on his campaign. I really believed this guy could make a difference in Utah. I've always agreed philosophically with the LP positions, just never thought they had a snowball's chance of being elected. This time felt different. The republican's originally fielded 8 candidtates,
winnowed them down to 2 in the convention, then those 2 faced each other in a primary yesterday. Neither was inspiring. But Richard Mack could beat them. This is the Arizona Sheriff who challenged the feds and won
in the USSC over the issue of Brady background checks. I was fired up.
Then he had to withdraw "for personal reasons." I was disappointed, but could accept that personal issues could force someone to bow out of a race for public office.
Then the traitors revealed what the compeling personal reason was. He decided to become a contestant on a
TV reality show: The American Candidate. So much for values and principles.

BOKE NOTE: AN INTERESTING/FUN-TO-PONDER LEGAL ANGLE: Did Showtime break the law in Utah by
when it enticed Richard Mack to drop out of the Governor's race?
On first glance a "silly" law might indeed have been broken. BUT how
did that law get on the books? (MORE TO PONDER)
"Because of how imbalanced our political system is, there's a very good chance that
Richard Mack could reach more people as a Libertarian candidate from Showtime's "American Candidate" show
than LP nominee Michael Badnarik will be able to reach through a traditional third-party campaign.
Only if he wins the prize,
though. Otherwise, Badnarik will probably get more net exposure."

Surprisingly, the United States wasn't the first country to propose such an idea.
A Buenos Aires television channel beat Murdoch by a couple of weeks

in 2003, but will also launch a new political party.

already so structured that, much like "reality TV," they are hardly "real" at all.
